Greenfield Pakyong Airport code of Sikkim made more easy to reach Gangtok Sikkim. The only Public airport of Sikkim is coming up at Pakyong , about distance of
35km from Sikkim’s capital Gangtok. Airport at an altitude of 4,700 feet will be among the five highest airports in the country. Sikkim’s upcoming airport raises hopes among people of breaking barriers & promises to provide direct connectivity to the tiny Himayalan state. “The work for the airport has been completed and it will be inaugurated by the year end,” said a senior official of the Airport Authority of India. “Once the Pakyong airport is inaugurated, it will ensure that Sikkim people do not have to travel 124 km via the choked National Highway 10 to catch a flight. Direct air connectivity will further boost tourism - the mainstay of the state’s revenue,” Sikkim’s long-time chief minister Pawan Chamling told HT.
Currently, tourists and others intending to visit Sikkim have to use the Bagdogra airport in Darjeeling district of West Bengal, which is 124 kilometres away from Gangtok. The National Highway 10 which connects Darjeeling district with Sikkim is often choked with heavy traffic and a journey from the airport to Gangtok at times takes seven or eight hours.
Those intending to visit Sikkim also face various disruptions on National Highway 10 due to landslides and other natural events as well as the Gorkhaland agitation.
The new airport will however make it easier and faster to get to Sikkim and is certain to boost tourism in the state.
